Natural Swimming Pools

Biopools, also known as natural swimming pools, are an eco-friendly alternative to traditional pools. They do not use chemicals to purify the water but instead rely on aquatic plants. These plants, both around and within the pool, help oxygenate the water and remove nutrients that could promote the growth of algae and other microorganisms.

Structure of Biopools

Biopools consist of two distinct sections: one for swimming and another for water purification. The purification area includes filtration substrates like gravel, volcanic rock, or sand, as well as plants.

Biopools can be either fully equipped with technology or operate without it. In the former case, an electric pump can be added to circulate water between the swimming and purification areas, enhancing the cleaning process. In a non-technified biopool, plants and the filtration system are placed in an impermeable surface, relying on natural elements like wind and terrain to move the water.

The choice between a technified or non-technified biopool depends largely on external factors such as climate and location.

Biopool vs. Traditional Pool

When deciding between a biopool and a traditional pool, it’s essential to weigh the benefits and drawbacks of each option.

Advantages:

1. Aesthetic Appeal: Biopools blend seamlessly with natural landscapes.
2. Skin-Friendly: Without chemicals, biopools are gentler on the skin, reducing the risk of allergic reactions and other irritations.
3. Environmental Benefits: These pools are eco-friendly and do not harm the surrounding ecosystem.
4. Flexible Design: Biopools can be adapted to fit various terrains.
5. Lower Maintenance Costs: Biopools do not require constant chemical replenishment or mechanical filtration systems. The plants maintain their function year-round.

Disadvantages:

1. Limited Capacity: Biopools can only accommodate a certain number of swimmers. The natural filtration may not keep up with high nutrient loads, resulting in less effective cleaning.
2. Micturition Control: Since urine is not removed in biopools, they may not be suitable for households with small children.
3. Space Requirements: Biopools need more space due to the separate swimming and purification areas, requiring a minimum depth of approximately 2.2 meters and a surface area of 25 m².
4. Plant Maintenance: Regular care and supervision of the plants are necessary, including removing dead leaves and monitoring plant health, which directly affects water quality.
5. Insects: Mosquitoes and other insects may be attracted to the water. Although they usually stay in the plant area, they can be a nuisance. This can be corrected by attracting dragonflies, which eat mosquitoes.

Biopools offer a sustainable and aesthetically pleasing alternative to traditional pools, with benefits for both the environment and users’ skin. However, they require careful consideration of capacity, maintenance, and space. The decision to install a biopool should factor in these advantages and disadvantages, ensuring that the choice aligns with personal preferences and environmental conditions.
